Dear Swimmer

We hope you and your families are all in good health at this unprecedented time for the country.  Of course, it goes without saying that you and your loved one's health and well being is the most important thing right now.

Although our pools are currently closed and swim training cannot take place, regular exercise remains one of the best ways to stay healthy both in body and mind.  As such, we have been putting together some land routines and other recommendations that you can do easily at home during the shut down to help you stay in good shape.

You will find an attachment with this message with some exercises geared particularly for Junior Development 1 swimmers.  We hope you will consider these and try to complete them during the additional spare time you have at home in the coming weeks.  Further below, you'll also find some more general recommendations about what to do during this time, including the need to do some simple cardiovascular work such as walking, running, cycling or circuit training.Stay fit at home during the Coronavirus

If you have any questions related to this please contact your squad lead coach or Coach Lewis Smith who will all be happy to assist you further or answer any queries you may have.

Kind regards and best wishes to all your family during this difficult time for us all.
Ian Wright & the COGST Coaching Team

Exercise, Fitness and Moving
Stay active to stay well. Although we're avoiding public facilities, exercising can still take place at home or outdoors – see training options below for details.
Try to use think of this period away from the pool as an opportunity to focus on areas of weakness like mobility, flexibility, strength or exercise for general health and wellbeing.

Nutrition and Eating
It is important that you adjust your nutrition in line with the change in physical activity which is likely to occur over the coming period.
Reduced physical activity = reduced energy requirements

It is still important to maintain the following:
• Eat 3 main meals per day – breakfast, lunch and dinner
• Maintain overall protein intake
• Utilise smaller portion sizes
• Choose lower calorie snack options  - e.g fruit, yoghurt, hummus & crackers, popcorn

Cardiovascular Training
These can be completed as either long extensive workouts, or interval style (long extensive interspersed with short bursts of higher intensity work)

Walking/running or a combination of both:
1. Build up volume/intensity slowly if you do not run regularly
2. Choose an alternative option if running causes disruption or injury.

Cycling
1. If cycling outdoors, ensure you wear appropriate clothing and adhere to safety regulations of the road.
2. A turbo trainer would allow you to set up a stationary bike at your house.

Circuit Training
1. Using a combination of running on the spot, skipping, jumping jacks, mountain climbers and burpees you can create an aerobic workout at home with minimum equipment needed.
2. An example circuit starts with 30s work & 30s rest with 1-minute rest between rounds repeating these 3 to 5 times – progress by increasing the work period

Glasgow Life have announced that they are closing all venues from close of business today until the end of April, when they will review the situation. This means that our club training programme has to be suspended until further notice. We will update you as soon as we have any more information.

Our club administrator will not be contactable by phone but if you need to, you can contact her by email at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

**** URGENT MESSAGE ****

I've literally just been informed at this late hour that unfortunately Scotstoun Pool is unable to open for our session (time trials) tomorrow morning - Saturday 7th March!

I don't have a reason/cause yet but I just received a message a few minutes ago from the venue manager to get the news out to parents as much as I can.

Sincere apologies for any inconvenience caused and hopefully we'll learn more details tomorrow.

For now though, Time Trials are cancelled and we ask that you do not turn up tomorrow morning.

Sorry again.

Please note that all swimmers selected below will swim at our home round. It is therefore important you confirm availability to Jamie.

As we are the host club, we need to provide some refreshments for the swimmers and also coffee / cakes / biscuits to the parents cheering on their children. Mini League swimmers will be given an envelope next week which will contain a letter outlining items to be placed in the bag, along with the sandwich bags. We would also be grateful if you could provide some cakes / biscuits for our coffee table.

Congratulations to all who made the team, we hope you are ready to swim great throughout the campaign and most of all ready to have loads of fun!

Objectives and Procedures – 2020 onwards

Purpose

COGST has been providing formal ‘Time Trial’ opportunities for Foundation and Development level swimmers for many years.

Review

A brief review of the Time Trial programme and systems was conducted in October 2019 as a result of feedback received from parents, swimmers and coaches regarding inconsistencies in delivery and confusion over the purpose.  The club’s coaches were consulted and asked to provide ideas for how to improve the Time Trial system in line with meeting its core purpose.

2020 Plan

This would be implemented from the first scheduled time trials in 2020 and monitored throughout the year to assess its effectiveness with possible amendments as needed.

Achievement Standards

The following standards will be used from January 2020.  These times should be used by swimmers as ‘Target Achievements’ to aim for.  Once an event has been ‘Achieved’ the swimmer can no longer contest it at any future Time Trial sessions.

Guidelines

  • Swimmers should normally participate in a maximum of 3 events within any Time Trial session. Higher level swimmers may do less than 3 races if they have already achieved most of the target times.
  • Swimmers aged 9/under can only enter 25s, 50s plus 100 Free and 100 IM.
  • Swimmers aged 10/11 can only enter 25s, 50s, 100s plus 200 Free and 200 IM.
  • Swimmers aged 12/over can only enter 50s, 100s, 200s plus 400 Free and 400 IM.
  • All 25m and 50m events are automatically ‘unlocked’.
  • Swimmers must ‘unlock’ at least two 50m Achievement Standards before they can enter any of the 100m events.
  • Swimmers must ‘unlock’ at least two 100m Achievement Standards before they can enter any of the 200m events.
  • Swimmers must ‘unlock’ at least one 200m Achievement Standard before they can enter any of the 400m events.
  • Events can be unlocked or achieved at Time Trials or Local Club or Schools Meets where official results sheets are produced.
  • Once a swimmer has obtained the Achievement Standard for an event they can no longer enter that event at any future Time Trial sessions.
  • Swimmers should consult with their squad coach about what events to participate in at each Time Trial.
  • Ages are as at 31st December in the year or competition.
  • If a swimmer does not easily fit within the above parameters, squad coaches will use their discretion on an individual basis to enable each swimmer to have an effective and meaningful time trial experience.

Future Considerations

Consideration should be given to further developing the Time Trials in the future to enhance the organizational and value of the event.  In particular, the following recommendations should be tested and implemented in the short to medium term.

  • Create the Time Trials as a calendar event on Team Unify which swimmers/parents must declare their intention to participate or not. A list can then be printed out and used on the day to mark attendance by each coach.  This would also allow for better planning of on the day arrangements such as timelines, recording, timekeeping and officiating duties.
  • Add a Time Trial event structure to TU which coaches would use to add swimmers to events in advance of the date. This would enable a draft psych/start sheet to be produced in advance and therefore the meet could be planned and pre-seeded in advance.

Many thanks

Ian Wright

COGST Head Coach

Please remember that if you are attending the Awards Night tonight, you must BRING YOUR TICKET WITH YOU to gain entry.

Although there is no charge for swimmers, they still need to have a ticket for the event, so please do not bring any 'extra' swimmers with you if they don't already have a ticket.

There is limited capacity for the hall and the event is SOLD OUT, so if you have not already been in touch with the committee to get your ticket, please do not just turn up, as we will not be able to admit you.

The next Time Trials will be held on Tuesday 29th October at Tollcross from 6 - 8.30pm as follows:

We will have a fancy dress parade in the club office at 6pm, so if you want to take part in this please be there on time. All swimmers who dress up will receive a goody bag and there will be a special prize for the best costume.

Swimmers will then go through to change and shower before going on poolside for 6.15pm.

We will be running a variety of events - your Coach will tell you which events you should swim, but to get the most benefit from Time Trials, please swim events which you do not have a current up to date time for. You can swim three events.
